Fiction-Free: Part 1 – “Low Fidelity”!

180714fidelityThree weeks into my fiction-free diet and I’m getting nostalgic. If you’ve ever read “High Fidelity” by Nick Hornby, or seen the film, you’ll get some idea of what I’m going through.

In the midst of a break-up with his girlfriend, the main character (ironically called Rob!), reminisces about former flames and the sordid details of how each relationship ended. In the opening stages of my fiction-free diet I’ve also started to reminisce – about books I’ve loved and lost. So, in the next few posts I’m going to travel back in time, literally, and take a look at Rob’s books.

I’ll leave the childhood favourites, evergreens like Winnie the Pooh and Alice in Wonderland out of this. These have become life-long friends and the relationship I have with them has always been totally platonic.

So, let’s plunge back into the first flames of adolescent infatuation. In my next post I’ll pay homage to a short story I discovered and fell in love with when I was 14 or 15. And to give you a clue as to what it was, I’ll just say this – it was made into a film starring Tom Courtenay. Any guesses?
